World Digital Preservation Day 2025 is coming up on Thursday 6th November, and launching a new global campaign as part of the celebrations.

Coordinated annually by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), this year’s World Digital Preservation Day theme is Why Preserve?’ World Digital Preservation Day is an opportunity to share your organisation’s unique reasons for preserving digital collections - your “why” - and showcase the diversity of perspectives across the community and inspire others to take action!

Your reasons could be:

  • Because in a world of misinformation, digital preservation protects the integrity of our records, research, and history.

  • Because digital preservation ensures that the stories, cultures, and knowledge of today remain accessible for generations to come.

  • Because preserving digital records is essential for compliance, accountability, and transparency in every sector.

  • Because when systems fail or staff change, preserved digital assets ensure your organization retains its memory - and its momentum.

  • Because digital preservation bridges generations and geographies, making knowledge and culture accessible to all.

  • Because data loss is costly. Preservation is a proactive strategy to mitigate risk and protect value.

  • Because digital preservation is about sustainability, adaptability and long-term thinking - not just storage!

Ways you can get involved:

  • Attend or organise a #WDPD2025 meetup
    • If you're attending iPRES in Wellington, we'll be celebrating World Digital Preservation Day with special events (details TBA), but we encourage you to connect with your colleagues and community wherever you are in the world! See the DPC website for more information.

  • Write a blog post
    • Write about how your organisation is preserving its digital assets and why it matters to you. It's a great opportunity to acknowledge the digital resources that our libraries, archives, museums and records services make available to our communities.

    • Highlight the collections you are working on by sharing photos, videos, and updates about your own digital preservation day using the social media platform of your choice OR take over the corporate social media account for the day to let others outside our community know about digital preservation! Remember to use the hashtag #WDPD2025

  • Participate in the DPC's "Why Preserve" campaign
    • Record a short vlog

Share why you preserve your collections, data, or content via a video blog, including the phrase: “We preserve because…”

    • Send a testimonial

A concise quote about your organisation’s “why” that the DPC can feature in graphics and social media posts on the day.
